FAQ

What is the AA Mexico Visiting School?
The AA Mexico City Visiting School is a summer workshop based in Mexico. This year the workshop will be travelling to the city of Oaxaca during July 2017 19-28th July 2017. The Visiting School offers the opportunity to experience first-hand, the Architectural Association, experimental culture, in the heart of Oaxaca City. The workshop is open to current architecture and design students, PhD candidates and young professionals from related disciplines

I don’t have a background in design—can I still apply?
The AA Mexico Visiting School encourages a multi-disciplinary approach. As a result, while the course is specifically geared towards experimental exercises in architecture, landscape architecture and urbanism, we encourage students from any related discipline such as engineering or geography to take part in this experience.

What are some of the computer programs used within the workshop?
Students are encouraged to explore a range of different tools relevant to the brief of the workshop. Alongside some of the more common 3D modelling and drafting software such as Rhinoceros or CAD, we explore the potentials of GIS mapping techniques in addition to some scripted simulations using mainly Grasshopper and CAESAR river simulation if needed. We will also explore the use of aerial mapping with the use of drones to collect and manipulate information.

Do I require prior knowledge of computing software like GIS, Rhino, Grasshopper, etc. Are these taught as part of the programme or is prior knowledge necessary?

Students aren’t expected to have any prior experiencing using the software. There will be computational support provided by technical tutors during the workshop so students will be introduced to basic skills.

Which language will be use during the workshop?
Main introductions and presentation will be conducted in both English and Spanish. Regular tutorials will be mostly in short groups or personal tutorials and they will be either in English or Spanish according to the students’ background. Most tutors are bilingual so you feel free to approach them in either language.

What is the programme of activities within the workshop?

The workshop starts on the 19th July 2017 at 10:00 am and finishes at 6:00 pm on the 28th July. You can have a look to the main schedule of activities here.

What about accommodation, can you recommend hotel and hostals to stay in Oaxaca and are they part of the fee?
Fees do not include flights or accommodation, but accommodation options can be advised.

The INSO ( Instituto de la Naturaleza y la Sociedad Oaxaqueña), a partner of the Visiting School 2017,  can provide accommodation on site, within the ‘Barranca del Pedregal’. The site has camping facilities and some cabañas where students can stay during the length of the workshop at very affordable prices. Please send an email to mexicocity@aaschool.ac.uk to find out more about this option.
